An Incredible Masonic Experience!

On October 20, 2012 I became the 120th Worshipful Master of Doric Lodge #92 in Fremont, Seattle, WA. I became the first African-American to serve in the top leadership position in the history of the Lodge. My Installing Officers included a diversity of races and Lodges from throughout the Seattle area. The following is the speech I gave to my fellow Masons, Community Leaders, friends and family in attendance.

“My theme for this year is “Faith in God, Hope in Immortality, and Charity for all Mankind.” Doric Lodge is a Community Lodge located in the center of the Universe- Fremont! We have a tradition of participating in charity efforts in the community- from helping refugee families at B. F. Day school, to our Bikes for Books program at the Fremont library, to partnering with Westminster Church to provide weekly community dinners.

I intend to continue these traditions as well as adding a few new ones that I hope the community will embrace. Starting the new year with a Martin Luther King Day of Service on January 21st that will bring community and faith based organizations together for the common good. We will also invite the Community into our Lodge during the Fremont Fair in June for an Open House with our Eastern Star Chapter #69 Brothers and Sisters.

Masonry is about “taking good men and making them better.” That will be my goal with activities such as Masters and Mentors, to invite Master Masons from Doric and other Lodges to become Mentors to newer masons. This is our 120th Installation, still we are a young Lodge with a new generation of Masons and we can always use the knowledge and wisdom of those that have gone before.

We will also have some fun activities such as the Doric Sporting Club and a Strawberry Feed and Barbeque Table Lodge. Speaking of which, I don’t know about you, but I’m getting hungry! So without further adieu, we will have the new Officers of Doric Lodge introduce themselves and their families and friends!”

A Parade of Officers followed down to the dining hall, beautifully decorated in navy blue and white by my wife Sarah Weathers. Our upwards of 60 guests were served a delicious Italian feast by members of Doric Eastern Star Chapter #69! Everyone enjoyed the hearty meal (Caterers- Soprano’s Pizza and Pasta) and great fellowship. The 2012-2013 Officers were each given a Square and Compass mug to symbolize my “Back to Basics” theme. Authentic New York Cheese Cake was served for dessert to add the crowning touch to an incredible and unforgettable Masonic Experience!
